Jack Hody Johnson is a famous singer-songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. Music is his main occupation, but he was also a professional surfer in the past, and he is now an actor, music producer, and documentary filmmaker.
Johnson has been musically active since 1992 when he was barely 18 years old. He is known for his popular and unique take on soft rock and acoustic rock, but also his love for folk-rock. He writes and performs all of his songs by singing, playing the guitar, ukulele, and keyboards.
This incredibly talented musician has made a total of seven studio albums, four of which have reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart, and one entering number two twice.
However, to say that he is only a hugely talented musician would not do him justice. Jack Johnson is also extremely famous for his charitable work, especially in environmentalism and sustainability.
The amount of work he does to help the world become a better place for our children is simply breathtaking. He is known to have supported almost 30 different charities and foundations and dozens of causes. His primary support is to the environment, but he is also well known for helping his fellow man and children.
In 2003, Jack and his wife Kim founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation that supports environmental education in numerous Hawaii schools. In 2008, they went further by creating the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation. It’s a non-profit that promotes art, music, and environmental education across the world.
Besides the two organizations, Johnson plays every year at festivals and concerts, most of which is in support of the causes he and his family want to assist. Besides the environmental ones, they also support disadvantaged youths, children, causes that fight cancer, depression and suicide, and more. They also work in support of human rights and health.
The fact that he donated 100% of his earnings from two of his tours in support of several causes he cares for would be enough for many to dub him a true agent of positive change. However, he went and did so much more outside of that. He and his Ohana Foundation raised more than $750,000 in a single year, all to give away to many causes outside of the ones he generally supports. He donated $50,000 to the GlobalGiving’s Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund in 2011 when he had to postpone his tour due to the same tsunami which struck Japan where he was supposed to play. In 2012 when Hurricane Sandy hit the US, he donated $50,000 to the relief fund and called on others through his site to donate as well.
Jack Johnson is not an extremely wealthy man, yet his donations and charitable work surpass many billionaires who claim to be massive supporters of good causes.
At one point, Rolling Stone wrote this about Johnson and his career choices: “It is a typically generous move from Johnson, who has used his multi-platinum success to support causes he cares about.” We can’t agree more, as Johnson is undoubtedly a person who cares deeply for the world and the people in it.
With all that he has done and continues to do, we can only say that he is a juggernaut of an agent for positive change. Never change, Jack.PreviousNext
