G. Love, or Garrett Dutton, is the famous frontman of the band called G. Love & Special Sauce. For those who are not aware, they are a notable alternative hip hop and blues-rock band from Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love. G. Love and his two partners, Jim Prescott (bass) and Jeffrey Clemens (drums), are known for having a unique musical style that’s much appreciated by their devoted fans. Their sound is a unique mixture of laid back blues rock with elements of alternative hip hop and some classic R&B.

G. Love formed the band in 1992 when he was only 20 years old, but he started playing music at the age of eight. He started playing solo early on, but later on, he formed a band his fans now love and respect.

The “G” in his stage name stands for Garrett, and he added Love because he thought it sounded right, which it certainly does for a proud Philadelphian born and raised. However, we believe that it stands for more than that. That’s because G. Love is a devoted agent of positive change, and this is evident from the several causes he advocates for and the charities he supported and still supports.

He showed this affinity for what’s right in the world early on, as he dropped out of college after studying for a single year, to start working as a fundraiser. He moved to Boston, where he began fundraising for Peace Action – a peace organization that fights the sales of weapons and deployment of nuclear weapons. They support the United States in a foreign policy based on a peaceful resolution to conflicts across the globe.

While working there as a fundraiser, he was still composing and playing with his band, and they quickly gained in popularity during the 1990s and the 2000s. They started touring, playing at various shows, and G. Love often collaborated with other musicians like his then-girlfriend Tristan Prettyman, along with Zap Mama and The Avett Brothers. Almost three decades later, he has three albums under his belt and eight with Special Sauce.

His charity work involves his support for creative arts, but more importantly, children. He works with charities like Little Kids Rock, an organization that strives to bring the joy of music to underprivileged kids. This organization is one of his favorites, and he is known to have played several times in support of its causes. For example, in 2017, he performed at their 3rd Annual Spring Jam Concert at the New York City rock club.

Besides Little Kids Rock, he has also supported the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, founded by Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Keith Barry. The Conservatory aims to provide extremely cheap, private music lessons to all children.

Besides this, G. Love has also contributed to This Warm December, a Brushfire Holiday Vol. 1, which is a Christmas album by Brushfire Records. A big part of the proceeds from the album went to non-profits.

We are happy to say that G. Love, through all of this charitable work, is undoubtedly a prominent agent of positive change, one of the many musicians who see the importance of helping children fulfill their dreams.
